2:365

2013 - 14

Oil on canvas. 6in x 8in.

Described as ‘a beautiful compilation of art and a significant contribution to the understanding of mental illness’ (Victoria Maxwell, Psychology Today), 2:365 comprises a collection of 365 abstract oil paintings which visually chart the daily psychological highs (mania) and lows (depression) of Missy’s experience of bipolar disorder from January 1st to December 31st 2013.

A collection of paintings from the 2:365 series was exhibited in Brussels, Belgium in 2013 and in Seattle WA in 2014 and again in 2017. The 2:365 Art Book featuring all paintings and the artist’s written diary of the year was launched in May 2014 in collaboration with the International Bipolar Foundation. 2:365 garnered the support of notable mental health advocates including Patrick J. Kennedy, Andy Behrman, Ellen Forney, Stephen Fry, Victoria Maxwell and Natasha Tracy. It has had a global impact, being featured on BBC Radio, BBC Online World News, Psychology Today, Better Mental Health Magazine (Australia) and BP Magazine (US). It was the subject of a 2018 webMD documentary and a 2021 Easy Minds Talk podcast with Shine News/Shanghai Daily (China). It has been the focus of numerous academic theses and seminars worldwide, at institutions including Brown University, UI&U, Psych Congress, NAMI and the International Bipolar Foundation.

In 2014, 2:365 was nominated for a U.S. National Council for Behavioral health Award of Excellence and Missy was nominated for the G.D.S.T UK Alumna of the Year Award in 2015.

Two paintings, Sectioned (2015) and The Response (2018) were created in the aftermath of the project:
